🌿 The History of Madhubani / Mithila Painting
The origins of Madhubani painting trace back to ancient India, when King Janak of Mithila commissioned artists to decorate walls during the wedding of his daughter Sita to Lord Rama. This ritual art, originally drawn on mud walls and floors of huts, evolved into a cultural expression passed down through generations.
Traditionally, Mithila paintings use natural pigments and dyes from plants, minerals, flowers, and rice paste. Brushes were made from twigs and bamboo sticks, and every inch of space was filled with symbolic motifs of flora, fauna, gods, goddesses, geometric patterns, and folk tales from the Ramayana.
Over the years, this art form shifted from walls to handmade paper, canvas, and cloth, making it accessible worldwide while keeping its authentic essence intact.
